We Always Get It
Backwards....
Have you ever been inspired? Have you ever had your eyes
opened to an idea and feel deep in your heart that this one idea
or concept was going to change your life? Nothing can ever
compare to the energy and power you feel in those moments.
The world makes sense. We see with such clarity and find
purpose for ourselves, our past, and look hopefully into our
futures. For us, at these moments, it all seems worth
while. We gain understanding, we move forward with
determination, and then IT ALL COMES CRASHING DOWN!!
How many times has
this happened to you? Does it seem to be happening more
frequently to you lately? I know I've seen it in my life
and in the lives of people I have come to know and love.
So let me see if, with the help of God's Spirit, I can shed some
light, open some eyes, or at least cause you to stop and seek
God for just a moment.
We all have hopes and
dreams. This is what God uses to motivate us to action,
but we internalize all of this and begin to feel that we are
somehow special or anointed. That God has seen how hard we
have worked and is now rewarding us with a special operation
that very few are ever called upon to do. And this is
where it all begins to falter.
Let me point you in
another direction for just a moment.....
If I were to ask you to draw a diagram of the body of Christ, to
use a geometric shape that would represent how the church is
structured odds are that you would use a pyramid. I am
certain that you would also place Jesus at the top of that
pyramid. For all things come to us through Christ.
And that is so true. But my point in all of this is that
even in this simple exercise we would get it wrong.
"For no one can lay
any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Christ
Jesus." (1 Corinthians 3:11)
"Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but
fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's
household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets
with Christ Jesus himself the chief cornerstone." (Ephesians
2:19-20)
How can Jesus be at
the top of this pyramid of the church if he is the foundation
that was laid for the church? Well, he is also named as
the capstone.
"He
is the stone your builders rejected, which has become the
capstone." (Psalm 118:22)
So for those who
accept Christ, he becomes the cornerstone of their foundation
and for those who reject him, he becomes the capstone through
which they can not proceed. But what does all of this have
to do with my point?
If you know the vision
I was given for Dark Horse Promotions then you know that vision
was shown to create a family of artists who would help one
another reach higher and higher in their careers. That we
would essentially build a pyramid of committed members whose
purpose was to help someone else succeed. And so I began
gathering people together for this purpose. And just as a
cheerleading squad builds a pyramid, we organized with a core
group at the base and began narrowing toward the top or
pinnacle. Just like you would have drawn the pyramid
representing the body of Christ.
But we have it all
wrong. We have made Jesus the capstone, rather than the
cornerstone, and all our efforts stop when we reach that point.
Turn your pyramid upside down. Make Christ the foundation.
Build upon him and your efforts will be able to continue on
forever. This is what God has done. The body of
Christ continues to grow because he is building in a way that we
would never attempt. |
